In Charlottesville, shops are busiest on Monday mornings and before holiday weekends, so a mid-week appointment gets a car seen faster. Labor rates across Virginia vary by neighborhood and by shop type, from small independents to dealership service bays, and mobile mechanics now cover many routine jobs in the driveway. Before authorizing a repair, ask for the estimate in writing, whether the shop warranties parts and labor (12 months / 12,000 miles is common, some offer more), and whether it can provide a loaner or a shuttle. Check the listing for hours, the makes the shop works on and its Google rating, then call ahead, since walk-in capacity is limited at smaller shops.

Charlottesville is in Virginia, in the Southeast, where summers are long, hot and humid, winters are mild, and afternoon thunderstorms and the hurricane season from June to November can change plans at short notice. Getting around Charlottesville is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across Virginia's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

My husband went in as soon as they opened this morning because he was told the service they provide is first come first served. He was looking to get an alignment, get some advice about a hole in the air filter, and have them look at the tire rods and suspension. Instead, they did absolutely nothing useful and still charged him $72. $72 for what, exactly? We didnโt expect anything for free. We expected a professional opinion, an inspection, or SOMETHING that would actually help solve the problems he brought the vehicle in for. Instead, he left with the exact same issues and a bill for $72. That isnโt just disappointing โ itโs the kind of experience that makes you question whether a business actually cares about its customers or just wants to collect a fee. Iโm posting this because people deserve to know where theyโre spending their hard-earned money. Think twice before bringing your vehicle here.

I had a flat tire, and I called ahead to see if Settle could fit me in right away, but they couldnโt, so they gave me tips on what to do and where to go. No other places could see me right away, so I ended up back at Settle where I had received the most support. Skyler explained the tire choices and costs, and Jack gave me a ride home, and we had such an inspirational conversation. I didnโt enjoy having a flat tire and cancelling all my plans for the day, but every person I met at Settle added joy to my day, and my car was ready for pick-up by 3:30. Perfect. Thank you!

This makes me sad but it's time for my breakup with Settle. During my inspection, found out needed one shock replaced. Tried to convince me to do all four and all four new tires. Tires are barely two years old. I asked to have the one shock replaced and it came to over $500. I got in touch with my mechanic who does everything for me outside of inspections and he was appalled at that price. If this is the price range of this shop now, it's been a good run. I've been a customer since 2013.

We had two tires installed about 18m ago, and then an aluminum wheel replaced 4 months ago. Two tires developed scalloping/"chopping", and they needed to be replaced. I asked how to best prevent "chopping", and they said proper pressure, balancing, and alignment were the most important. I told them I kept the tires at the correct pressure. I asked if they performed an alignment at any of the previous visits as well as the most recent, and they said "no". I asked if that was an important factor in proper tire maintenance, why didn't they suggest alignment? I asked them to do an alignment, and they charged >$100. My issue is that if alignment was important, why did they not suggest/offer so as to save the cost of two tires? In addition, they informed me that if I bought a separate road hazard package, the total charge would have been about $40, but that was never offered as an option with previous purchases (and not offered with the most recent). Instead, I spent >$650 for two tires and alignment. So, their communications can be improved, and they should post common prices/services. But, they've always been good mechanics, and I'll probably come back to Settles, but I'll need to reme
